Virtual Tabletop RPG group therapy In Ohio
What is TTRPG Therapy?
Tabletop roleplaying game therapy (TTRPG therapy) is a creative, interactive form of group therapy that uses roleplaying games to support mental health growth, emotional regulation, coping skills, and social development. In a typical tabletop roleplaying game, a group of players work together to solve problems, explore a story, and overcome challenges in a world guided by a Game Master (GM).
In therapeutic tabletop RPG groups, a licensed therapist leads the game and helps participants work toward real-life therapy goals through gameplay. This approach combines the benefits of group counseling, experiential therapy, and roleplay-based self-exploration in a supportive and structured environment.
TTRPG therapy can help participants practice communication, emotional awareness, decision-making, stress management, and problem-solving in a way that feels engaging, collaborative, and less intimidating than traditional talk therapy alone.
How Does TTRPG Group Therapy Help?
Tabletop RPG group therapy offers a nontraditional but effective way to work toward common mental health goals. Through storytelling, character development, teamwork, and guided challenges, clients can explore difficult emotions and life patterns in a fictional setting with real-world relevance.
For example, in an anxiety therapy group, players may face situations that mirror stress, uncertainty, or fear in a supportive environment. This can help participants build confidence, practice emotional regulation, and develop healthier responses to distress.
In a coping skills therapy group, players learn how routines, self-care, attention to needs, and thoughtful choices affect outcomes in the game. These experiences can translate into better self-awareness and stronger coping strategies in everyday life.
TTRPG therapy may be a great fit for people who:
Have found traditional talk therapy difficult
Want additional support alongside individual counseling
Feel nervous about starting therapy
Learn best through doing, interacting, and experiencing
Enjoy games, storytelling, and collaborative problem-solving
Why is TTRPG Therapy Helpful for Neurodivergent Clients
TTRPG therapy for neurodivergent teens and adults can be especially helpful for people with ADHD, autism, anxiety, and other neurodivergent identities. Many neurodivergent individuals benefit from therapy that is interactive, relational, creative, and less dependent on direct verbal processing alone.
At Neurodivergent Ohio, we understand that some people may struggle to explain their experiences in a traditional therapy setting. Virtual tabletop RPG therapy groups can create a more natural and engaging way to build insight, practice social skills, and strengthen emotional coping tools.
This style of therapy can support:
Social skills development
Emotional regulation
Anxiety management
Communication skills
Problem-solving
Self-awareness
Confidence in group settings
For many neurodivergent clients, learning happens best through active participation. TTRPG group therapy offers a hands-on, supportive space to grow while connecting with others who may share similar experiences.
What Kinds of Groups are Available?
-Anxiety group
10-weeks
Start date TBD after group limit is reached
How can this help my anxiety? Acting out scenarios that could have a real-life analog can be a safe form of exposure therapy. The challenge to your character is also a challenge to you as a client. You’ll be tested with tough decisions, impending threats, and battles that will help simulate anxiety-inducing situations and teach you how to navigate them with success. Players and characters also have the support of other clients participating in the game, creating a feeling of security and a chance to learn from others’ examples.
-Coping skills group
10-weeks
Start date TBD after group limit is reached
What coping skills can I get from a fictional environment? In this game, your decisions affect your character’s well being. Routines, behaviors, and attention to self-care are all integral to having a successful game. In life, as in the game, you benefit from taking stock of your needs and acting accordingly to get those met. Additionally, actions always have consequences, which could turn out to be beneficial or have a detrimental effect. Acting out how to address consequences in-game is a safer outlet for working on how the real you takes on life’s consequences.
